Dramatically Increase the Illusion of Depth in Your Landscapes

In this video, I show you how just a couple of touches of color can create dynamism between foreground and background in your painting, and will dramatically increase the sense of depth in your painting. The focus of this video is that a couple of small changes can dramatically yield big results in the success of your painting. I created a "Before and After" video of the paintings based on your...

    thank you for your perspectives! I really enjoy the way you break down the moving parts you can align to express with authenticity. That's motivating in art!

    That’s very interesting, thank you. Why not have both? Can you not have multiple foci? Get the viewer’s attention, then entice him/her to supplement and complete the picture with their own imagination outside of your painting. It stays with them, but as an invitation to make your painting the starting point of their journey. I think an artist owes this to the viewers of his/her painting.

    6:31 It starts with the dandelion left bottom corner. The child is balancing the white and the black, the light and the darkness.

    4:52 The tree in the right upper corner. To me, that is the protagonist of the painting. The house is empty. Unnatural. Artificial. Too well defined in contrast with the nature and the old building. The soul of the painter is trying to escape, hence the unseen upper part of the tree that is ‘up in the sky’.

    Abbreviating those two trees on the right opened up the painting. Terrific video. Thank you.

    This is beautiful to watch. I love the resistance against adding detail and how that makes the picture. Where I live, we have a lot of forest I draw but I'm still limiting my choices of scene due to the fact that a lot has volumes of foliage that are very sparse with very thin foliage - I've not figured them out yet as they're quite intangible in terms of depth - At some stage I'll go in with the paints but I think I'll start with compositions that have a lot of solid elements but with just small patches of the thin, layered stuff that's problematic so far.

    Ian can I ask why do you prepare the canvas with a tone? Thanks ❤ from Australia 🇦🇺

    • @IanRobertsMasteringComposition
      @IanRobertsMasteringComposition 12 годин тому

      There is hardly any white out in nature. White buildings in sunlight maybe gets close. So by toning the canvas you a removing that problem of putting each new color onto white and the huge unnatural contrast that creates. Also when you are finished if small spots of the toned canvas shows through they just tend to fall into the illusion. Spots of bare white canvas tend to jump and particularly when you photograph the image.

      That is hopefully the case that the painting is better than the photo. Partly because the photo is not taken for the sake of the photo itself (meaning it may not be a great photo on its own) but because of its potential as a painting. The language of painting and the language of photography are usually different one from the other.
